Cottontree Caravan Park - Maroochydore - Queensland Sunshine Coast |
| About an hour and a half north of Brisbane is an area known as the Sunshine Coast. It is the northern version of the famous Gold Coast, but without all the glitz and glamour! We are at Maroochydore and right on the river and only two minutes from a surf beach. There are three parks to choose from in the immediate area and all are either beach or riverfront. This is a delightful area and it can be very hard to find a vacant spot, as sometimes there is an invasion during winter from Victorians "escaping" the cold! |

The tidy office at Cotton Tree |
| Seabreeze Caravan Park is a wonderful council owned park right on the ocean. The two huge riverside parks are also council owned and very well managed and maintained. This review is on Cottontree and Pincushion right at the mouth of the very scenic Maroochy River. They are actually side by side, hence why we are covering the two. Let’s look at Cottontree first up. Check in is warm and friendly, with plenty of touristy info on display. You are given a coloured mud map, then invited to park your van in the reception lane and to go take a peek at the sites before paying. A great idea on the map is marking the sites with pads with an "A". Obviously the absolute riverfront sites are in the most demand, but nevertheless most have grass, some excellent shade and all are numbered. None are actually drive thru, but we should imagine in the off season you could probably stay hitched by straggling two sites. (1to 44 the best bets for this) All roads are bitumen kerb and gutter, so dust is not a problem and the park is fairly leafy. There are plenty of non-powered sites. There is a boom gate controlling both in and out traffic operated by a proximity card. A single key is provided for the amenities. |

Good deals! |
Not really an A'van! |
| All sites have sullage and town water. The water taste is not too brilliant, so if you can, bring your own. TV reception is good even on rabbit ears. Telstra digital and CDMA work at full strength. There is a Gold phone near the office and normal phone boxes just outside the main gates. There is no on-site shop, but everything you need is just across the road with Woolworth’s in the Big Top Shopping Centre less than a kilometre west. |

The adjacent caravan park - dirt roads |
Our sites this visit - long weekend |
| Three large all brick and masonry block amenity blocks are mostly tiled, very well ventilated and fully insect screened. All showers have an aluminium seat and lots of hooks. We liked the fibreglass doors, a great practical long lasting idea. No soap dispensers or dryers though. Very sensible cleaning times too – around 4PM to 5PM, but you will never get caught out as another block will always be open. The laundry is huge and very airy and it is always open – an expensive $3.00 per wash and $1.20 to dry. Bit confusing here – a large sign on the wall says $2.20! Not a great deal of line space though for peak times. No restrictions though on using lines on your own site. There is a Laundromat just outside the park as well. Plenty of hot water provided to the tubs and there is free power to the permanently fixed ironing boards. There is a four sink dishwashing area adjacent to the laundry with plenty of bench drainer space. |

Lovely shady sites |
| There is little traffic noise at night and overall the park is pretty peaceful. No early morning fishermen and as the permanents are away from the tourists you don’t hear them popping off to work. However, if you are still asleep at 8AM you wont be for long as the milkman comes around blowing his cute "cow horn"! This could, of course, be quite different in peak times as during our stay it was only half full of campers. |

Jogging in the morning |

You can swim in the river right in front of the park. Care needed here though as the current can be very strong. The area has a lovely sandy beach. The surf beach is patrolled at several clearly marked points. The park has no pool. You find out why when you take an early morning walk. The council has a magnificent pool complex right next door to the park. We just couldn’t believe the number of people our age "doing laps" at 6.00AM in the morning! They were mostly locals and the lifeguard was even on duty. Made us walk an extra couple of kilometres! Walking in the whole of this area is easy and flat – no excuses for any age not to do some exercise daily. There are plenty of diversions which make the time go more quickly – you can even organise your walk to get a tail wind on the way home! |

Very safe swimming in the park |
Tie your boat up near your camp site |

There is no camp kitchen as such and only one 20 cent electric BBQ for a huge park. No fires allowed by the way. Once again though the council has excellent parkland right next door and there are lots of covered BBQ’s to choose from. We loved the gentle lights on top of each power pole. Each has a photoelectric cell and it switches on automatically at dusk. If you are looking for a night out there is the Oz Rocks nightclub, and a plethora of restaurants ranging from the excellent local fish and chip shop with tables outside to five star jobs. Most are within easy walking distance so you can really let your hair down. Don’t miss Simply Pies right opposite the park entrance. Wonderful place plus excellent bread and, naturally, a Silver Medal winner. Every Sunday they close off one street outside the park and turn it into a market. This is fantastic and not to be missed, as it truly is an Australian Made craft market. It has everything and is a great spot for picking up cheap Christmas/birthday presents. There is an Internet café just across the road from the park. |

Internet just across the road |
Early morning on the river |
|
One gorgeous shop "A Country Lane" was closed Mondays. Probably just as well or Chrissy would have had a field day. Lots of country knick knacks, teddy bears and other soft toys, beautiful timber articles for virtually any room of the house, ornaments – so many temptations. The shop itself was beautifully laid out – full but not cluttered – back walls of cream, blue and terracotta – we will be back just to visit this shop if nothing else. They also have a similar shop at Montville according to signs inside the door. They are open Tuesday to Sunday – so make sure you are there on one of those days but watch your budget!!!! All the comments made above apply to Pincushion Caravan Park as well – price is identical too. The only difference is it has sites divided with neat pole fences and it has a more natural feel, as roads are mostly dirt. You are however right on the river and ocean beach. This park is the more suitable for tent based camping. There is a more conventional formal area near the main entry with bitumen roads. Both parks have quite a few permanents, but they tend to be grouped out of the way so you don’t notice them. Both parks offer the same discount – stay for seven days – pay for five. A very good deal indeed! |

Wow! |
The entrance to the Sunday markets |
| Walking and bike riding opportunities are really excellent. At low tide you can walk and ride for miles heading south down the beach. The beach has been heavily sand bagged due to recent heavy seas and rehabilitation work is still being carried out on the beach and frontal dunes by sand pumping. Walking/riding west from the park is absolutely lovely as the very forward-looking council has kept the foreshores available solely for recreation and it truly is a credit to them. You can walk for miles following the river or digress and look at cute little shopping precincts of the pedestrian mall type. Lots of empty shops though! |

Driving opportunities are also enormously varied. You can explore the endless string of beaches to the north and south. Bribie Island is also a good spot. Elanda Point is absolutely fantastic and trip to the Buderim Ginger Factory is a must see. For those travelling north next you might like to try Barkoola Caravan Park at Woodgate Beach – pets most welcome or one of our all time favourites Elanda Point just in from Pomona – no pets as it is in a National Park at Cooloola. Those travelling west might like to give Imbil Deer Park a try – pets most welcome. |

Fantastic markets over the road |
Wonderful knick knacks |
| During our stay there were five A’vans in the camp – almost a mini club meeting! The Great South East TV show has visited this area several times and the positive reviews are in their archives. Martin Bowerman has more info in his excellent book Camping in South East Queensland. The Internet has lots of material on the Maroochy area. For more information contact Ray and Judy Dawson, Cotton Tree Caravan Park, The Esplanade, Cotton Tree, Qld, 4558. Interesting mangrove roots |
Wonderful walking! |

The Maroochydore Council deserve to be congratulated for the really excellent work done on the Maroochy Caravan Parks website. All the info you could ever need is there, extremely straightforward to navigate, easy to compare features of each location and best of all you can book instantly online. An excellent example of using the internet to the full and making life easier for both operators and tourists alike. We only have one minor complaint - no pets allowed at any location. Could the council perhaps make one of the parks dog accessible as there are so many retirees travelling around with their "children". Cost for a powered site in October 2001 was $20.46. Key deposit $20.00 – must be paid in cash, but you can pay the accommodation portion on credit cards/Eftpos. No pets allowed at any of the parks. Absolutely recommended. |
