Increasing A'van Jockey Wheel Clearance

This modification increases ground clearance by at least 60 mm on your A'van. Whilst the newer swing away jockey wheels are a huge improvement on the traditional removable type, they have problems when used with conventional cars. You cannot retract the wheel enough, and in some cases one has to resort to jacking to swing the wheel up, or placing levers in the swivel assembly. This modification is very quick and well within the capabilities of those with a welder at home. All you do is remove the swivel assembly. Next carefully grind away all the light welds holding the outer sleeve to the swivel mechanism. Reweld exactly as the original, BUT move it right to the bottom of the outer sleeve. Make sure you paint all old welds plus the new ones with cold galvanising. If you haven't got a welder just take the swivel part to your dealer or local tow bar shop and get them to do the deed for you. Be certain to replace the split pins with NEW ones.

The photos on the left below are the factory fitted jockey wheel. The shot with the rule shows the huge amount gained. The modification appears not to interfere with load levellers or stabilisers. If your welding is a bit shaky try using CIG Iron Powder 12 gauge rods as these "strike" easily and give a wonderful finish as the slag just curls up and falls off by itself!
