The Abbey Caravan Club in England is possibly the most "with it" RV club with regard to technology. If you click on the links in this story it will bring up a huge page, with very nifty forms that their members fill in to let the Committee know exactly what the members want. Unlike some Australian clubs on the net they have the same attitude as us, and have no Members Only areas locked away from the general public. It really is a wonderful very user friendly site and an absolute credit to those responsible for putting it together. We know first hand what a massive job it would have been!

Have they been watching toooo many Westerns?

Abbey would make a fantastic "sister" club for us! Caravanning is totally different in the UK. First up the summer season is much shorter and parks actually COMPLETELY close down for almost half of the year. Caravan parks are mostly less developed. Many are just an open field called a PITCH. Few have the luxury of hook ups as we have all become so accustomed to in Australia. But, they have other top end parks that make our efforts look rather puny! These have everything you could ever think of, including incredible entertainment. Some cater for specialist things like organists etc. The indoor facilities have to be seen to be believed - they are gi-normous!

The caravans themselves are totally different from Australia. They had the modern look of the tinted windows on the A'van years and years ago. All their windows were mostly the bubble type. Most towing vehicles are only four cylinder and you come across the tiniest cars towing vans! This is because they have no step hills. They would all have heart attacks if they came out here and had to try some of our 12% monsters! Things we take for granted in Australia like fires on the ground aren't allowed in most places. Shade is rarely an issue as it is here. You can spend many a happy hour looking at all the wonderful things on their site. We can't understand why it hasn't won some sort of award. We absolutely love England and the caravanning fraternity are the best people on earth!

The manufacturers of Abbey Caravans - the Swiftsure Group have just won a very interesting award. This was for the Best Consumer Initiative which went to the company's Supercare Superlink spare parts service which links all 150 dealers in the UK together with importers in Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Japan directly into the company's Cottingham head office via the internet.

Over ½ million parts are accessed via the new system which has been developed on a simple interactive format, enabling dealers to accurately identify parts and many show actual photographs of parts before dealers place their orders.
