Caravan and Motorhome - Review

Caravan and Motorhome Magazine is an Express Publication, comes out monthly and costs $6.99 for around 164 or so pages. Regular readers will have noticed quite a few changes over the past few months since editor Pat Callinan has taken over the helm. Gone are the irritating photos at an angle and it now has a younger, very crisp uncluttered, business like appearance. In fact it has become the top selling RV magazine even though it is the newest on the scene. Yes we certainly look forward to it coming out each month and haven't missed an issue. If you buy it from a newsagent you get an extra free bonus magazine. These are usually old back issues of the same mag, but sometimes you get other camping magazines. This we feel is much better than pulping the returns and we often share our "spares" with friends. This month's effort though is super special as it has a toyshop for boys catalogue! Yes it is the 150 page Essential RV Parts Guide from Caravan Accessories. We have a small review on this catalogue in this same section for those wishing to part with lots of their hard earned cash!

So what's this magazine got that has catapulted it to top of the heap in such a short time? Well to start with it focuses almost equally on motorhomes as well as caravans and campers. To put this in perspective there are around 320,000 caravans and just 37,000 motorhomes registered in Australia, so that's a huge "neglected audience"! The reviews are no better or worse than the other mags. Our main beef with all RV reviews regardless of publisher is they don't get down to the nuts and bolts level. We would like to see a little more criticism  in reviews - no caravan or motorhome is perfect, in spite of what the magazines might tell you about the product.  Does anyone tell you the amp hour rating of a battery, wattage and brand of a solar panel, explain if it has a smart charger or converter, tell you how hard it is to fill some motorhomes with diesel or give the actual ball weight of a van as tested etc.? In a recent edition for instance a very well presented article on electric brakes (the best ever in Australia in our view) failed to advise readers of the very real problems confronting A'van owners if they fit 100% electronic controllers and how using such a device can effect the Alko axle warranty. This is fairly common knowledge and one can only assume that the writer didn't do any user group research on the Internet.

Caravan and Motorhome are really trying to be that little bit different and are the only ones with a Health and Fitness section. Another great idea is the newly compiled buyers guide. Admittedly this needs work as it is a little hard for oldies to read and would possibly be better as a table, but nevertheless it can save you hours on the phone and makes comparing models so much easier. Regular items such as the Grey Nomads are a wonderful idea, as it encourages those of us too scared to give it a go, to get our acts together, and start going Around Oz.  Another good move is reviewing travel related websites as some are just so hard to find. The quality of most photographs is exceptionally good and yes it is a full colour magazine. Taking photos inside RV's with draws and cupboards open and shut is a brilliant idea. The Snapshot section is one of our favourites as it shows Australians enjoying our wonderful country.

More info from subs@expresspublications.com.au. You can subscribe on line however when we checked it was the only magazine in the Express Publications' stable without a price, but it did say you can save 50%. Very little info on the website. A few good ideas like viewing back issues and what's in the next issue, however rather oddly this section was four months out of date. Express really needs to look at this urgently, as so many of us buy direct from the Internet. Overall a darn good read and a magazine that one looks forward to receiving every month.  Absolutely recommended!
