Queensland Rest Area Closures

Overnight rest stops are really taking a hammering in some parts of Queensland at present. The Bowen saga has spread to Cairns, Gordonvale and Mossman with there now being NO overnight rest stops in these areas whatsoever. Here is an interesting letter from the December 2001 RACQ Open Road magazine. It sums up the situation quite well. If you feel strongly about this subject why not write in to our A-Forum section and air your views and perhaps make some suggestions on how to rectify this problem..

What about the rest?

Why is it that the motoring public, the largest group of taxpayers in Australia, are having more and more of their overnight rest areas closed?

You see signs, "Rest and revive, stay alive", but when you reach the rest areas you are confronted with a sign that tells you overnight camping is not allowed. It's OK to rest all day, but try resting at night and you could wind up in court. That's crazy.

It's about time the major motoring bodies, along with the caravan and motoring clubs put pressure on the authorities to have these signs taken down and build more off-road areas where the travelling public may rest and revive.

Let's see more councils like Gayndah and Gin Gin, which go out of their way to cater for road users with beautiful 48-hour rest areas.

R. Mounser, Maroochydore.
