Easymail Service Closing - Alternatives

We came across this message on an Australian board and suggest that anyone using Telstra Easymail start thinking about alternatives. There are a few listed on this site. A simple Nokia method is outlined here. Going down the CDMA using the soon to be superceded LG-800W track there is information here. Telstra have just released another Kyocera options which connects to the internet via a low cost number and allows email. Costs start at $40.00 a month with $40.00 free calls and you must buy your own phone - expect to pay $600.00. If you can possibly hold fire there is a new and better technology about to be released. The alternatives mentioned on the Telstra site are to say the least very vague! We are presently trialling using BigPond as you can connect to the internet via your laptop and a landline for the cost of a local call ANYWHERE in Australia. The number starts with 019 and you use the SAME number for all locations. Now the really good news is Information Centres are starting to provide internet connection points in their offices - just like the airport in Singapore!

By far the cheapest and easiest way of emailing while on the road
is the Pocketmail.  The device (about the size of a spectacle
case) has full qwerty keyboard, costs about $100 - $150
(available from Post Office, Target etc), connection costs $25 a
month but cheaper plans are available.  Sends and receives email
by holding it up to a phone, mobile or payphone or ordinary
phone, costs of a local call (1300 number).  Does NOT connect to
www, just does email.

As part of a regular review of our services, Telstra has conducted an extensive assessment of the Easymail™ service. The review identified that the Easymail service is not commercially viable and the existing technology is no longer sustainable. Unfortunately, therefore, Telstra can no longer continue to provide this service. However, if you wish to continue to enjoy using email, there are alternatives available which offer many additional benefits.

The Easymail service will be withdrawn from the market in May, 2002. The current service will continue to operate, including access to Easymail technical support, until that date, however Easymail will not be accepting new registrations.

As an alternative to Easymail, we offer the following solutions:

bulletIf you do not have internet access, Telstra BigPond™ has a range of plans available from as low as $5.95 a month (technical support is available - calls subject to a charge unless the problem was caused by Telstra). You can access Telstra BigPond anywhere in Australia for the cost of a local call.
bulletIf you already have internet access, you can log onto telstra.com and register WebMail addresses for free
bulletYou can obtain internet access from local public internet facilities such as in a library.

More information about Telstra BigPond is available on www.bigpond.com.
