| Summer is coming - and Robyn Cook's book
"The Holiday Lifestyle Cookbook" would be a welcome addition to any cook's
library. From the planning to the end product, Robyn gives you
step-by-step instructions, which are enhanced by excellent photos, even down
to the utensils you should use. One section is devoted to recipes to be made at home so it is ready for eating on arrival. There are a large selection of herbs mentioned in these recipes but remember you can always substitute for a similar item, if you wanted to try one of these particular techniques when on the road. Breakfast to Brunch has such mouth watering delicacies as Caramelised Bananas to Coconut Pancakes to Poached Mandarins or even Panfried Bananas with Rice and Pecans. You can choose the fruit in season or use up last night’s left over rice. For Lunch to late afternoon there are some easy snacks, which could easily be converted to Happy Hour treats. Dinner to Supper includes the use of the covered barbecue (most of us would know this as a Weber) features in a lot of recipes. Whilst this may not be what we would take in our caravans or motorhomes, we could easily adapt these culinary delights to a camp oven or even a normal oven (if you have a motorhome). Seafood is well covered - good if you have a handy fisherman in the family - and there are even a few vegetarian recipes thrown in for good measure. The index at the back of the book is sorted by type, chicken, pasta etc, which I found very helpful when looking for inspiration with limited ingredients on hand as so often happens when you are out and about in your A'van. The 96 page book is about three quarters of A4 in size and would fit easily into a magazine/book holder or in a cupboard or drawer when travelling. The photos are of the finished meal or snack rather than a “how to do” piece by piece series, but the written instructions are clear and concise making it ideal for beginners as well. Robyn and partner John have styled this book for anyone in a holiday mood. With a little innovation by the travelling chef, you could use all the recipes they have created, even if you don’t have all the cooking appliances. However this is more than compensated by the clear instructions and easy to read layout. A rather odd omission though, is no contact details at all anywhere in the book, on methods of purchase, other than it is printed by Oracle Press, In this electronic age many of us purchase on the internet. Our copy came directly from Robyn at a trade show. We have seen the book in larger camping supply shops. Good value at around $25.00 and an excellent stocking filler for a travelling “Mum and Dad” for birthdays or Christmas. |
