Get Up & Go!

This is a small book especially designed for the "young at heart oldies"!  Available from Woolworth's at $3.95 (we heard it advertised on the radio), it is styled as a travel guide for Seniors 2001/02, and is published annually on behalf of Seniors Card. Obviously you would expect if it involves the Seniors Card there are plenty of places which give preference to holders of the card.  There are even a few pages for travellers to Britain and Canada.

Content wise, there are many hints and tips for planning, travelling, where to go and what to do. However, there are a few problems - e.g. be prepared to check  the fees/prices mentioned, e.g. on page 124 a mining licence at Mt Tamborine Thunderbird Park is quoted at $6, when in fact it is $7.70.

On page 67, there are Natural Wonders including Jenolan Caves, Katoomba Scenic Railway and Skyway, Mt Kosciusko Ski-tube, Mt Warning National Park and the Walls of China in Mungo National Park. The heading for the page is "Sydney NSW". We Aussies would, of course, know these are not in the immediate Sydney area, but it would be a little confusing for overseas tourists using this book as a bible.

In summary - you have a 128 page book, full colour, glossy paper, easy to read, heaps of advertisements and advertorial matter (it is obviously funded by the ads to sell at such a price) but the best part without doubt is the hints to get cheaper fares on public transport at off peak times, the discount coupons at the back of the book (even if one is for a $500 for 3 nights B&B - a saving of $160 - or some of the five star plus hotels - not what you would expect in an average couple's budget!)

Overall it is cheap and you get what you pay for - there is more information available from RACQ, NRMA, RACV and similar local tourist centres at a fraction of the cost - if not free!
