Could A'van Use These Ideas on the Ray?

We spotted this rather incredible very old little van at Christmas down at Wallagaraugh near the NSW/Victorian border. Sadly we couldn't speak to the owner as he arrived the night before we left and went fishing at the crack of dawn the morning we left. It appears that like The Ray this van needs no external supports. We noted the use of lots of continuous piano hinges. It certainly expands out into a good size camper with absolutely zero canvas - obviously light years ahead of its time. Can anybody shed some light on its origins as it had no labelling whatsoever, meaning it could have been a "one off" experimental unit.
