Alaska Adventure - home after 10,987 miles and 39 days....

Believe it or not this is all on a wonderful web site that is sure to inspire others to follow in Bob's footsteps or at least to get out there and give it a go! Bob lives in Oregon in the north west of the United States and of course he has an A'liner. The site tells the story of plucking up the courage to go on his first camping trip, how to research such a long trip, what it all costs etc. At this point in time Bob did not own an A'liner and was not too happy with his proposed tow vehicle. He looked at everything and eventually saw an ad for A'van. The ad said it had been designed for "trans-continental touring and off-road adventures". Well that was it for Bob and the rest as they say, is history! Have a look in Preparation as this is a mine of information and gives an excellent list of links. Our favourite is the same as Bob's! You can while away hours on Mark's Fulltime RV Adventure - the "I'm a Dummy" page is hilarious and so true! Mark has been on the road since 1997 in a 5th wheeler and you can follow his progress on an almost daily basis - great stuff! Bob's 31 item equipment list applies to Australia as well. The Itinerary section is almost a travel diary and has lots of photos. The cost summary is reproduced below and again is relevant to Australia as camp sites tend to be 10% dearer over there. Fuel works out around 40+ cents a litre.

This does not include preparation or stocking of the trailer initially with food.   Not all of the cost of food purchased on the road was fully recorded.  Service includes oil changes, washes, replacing broken keys, etc..   Overall this table is an accurate estimate of the trip expense.  Camping expense in Canada was very reasonable when converted to US$.  To match expense with location, match the day with the same day on the itinerary.   All expense based on prices during May, June, 1999.

Bob on the way back to Oregon

The picture gallery makes you want to be there! Bob does his website work on the road using the IBM network for updates - wonderful stuff as it is usually for the cost of a local call. He mentioned to us he would love to travel to Australia, but the closest he has got so far is Japan. You can email  Bob to encourage him to do more interesting travel yarns to keep us all fired up! He is currently planning a six week trip way up into Labrador via the Maritimes. WOW!
