The Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia - CMCA - now has 29,000 members and the photo above shows the 2002 Rally at Barcaldine - yes folks they are wall to wall motorhomes - almost 1200 of them. So how does a tiny town with a population of just 1,120 cope with such a massive influx? They actually did it brilliantly with everyone in the local area pulling together - particularly the local council. Other councils from as far away as Western Australia sent delegates to try and woo the CMCA into visiting their area! Wonderful stuff. The venue was the local showground caravan park. This normally only has a couple of small amenities blocks. The council simply trucked in portable amenity blocks, erected a stage and used the covered areas provided by the show ground. Power was not a problem as the CMCA have their own sparky and he attends the venue early and organises extra distribution boards. We did a story on the rally for a motorhome site we look after.
