Since this photo was taken we have helped fellow A'vanners install inverters. The idea of mounting it outside the cupboard was to aid ventilation. We have since found that this is not necessary and now mount them inside lockers and put a small vent to the inside of the van (beside the sink wall is a wonderful spot). It MUST be as close as practical to the battery. |
| 240 Volt from your A'van Battery A detailed article on inverters is presently in progress for the DIY section, as we have received lots of emails on this topic. Could anyone else with inverter experience please email us? In the meantime here's what we did in our 3C. An inverter changes 12 volt Direct Current (your battery) into 240 volt Alternating Current (AC). So, you use your inverter if you are in the bush with no 240 volt. You are limited to what appliances you can operate. We use it for running an 8" fan, a stab mixer for making soup, running a quite large sewing machine, TV, video, and charging phone batteries, torches, toothbrush, lap top computers etc. The cost is around $300.00 for a 150 watt unit. We can't recommend Bob Eldred of Battery World at Slacks Creek in Brisbane enough. (07) 3209 3144. Bob spent over an hour with us going through all the options and made absolutely sure we understood what he was saying. We were actually prepared to spend a lot more money but he showed us that 150 watts was all we needed. There are dozens of el-cheapo inverters on the market. Don't waste your money. For once we went down the right track, BUT we have many camping friends who wasted their money including Siggy & Heather on modified sine wave units! They have since purchased a 225 watt model - same brand as us. We suggest you only look at FULL SINE WAVE models as these give CLEANER power than what you get out of the 240 volt house mains and you will never have "spike" or "surge" problems and zero fears during electrical storms as all the wiring is inside the van.. |
