Power Cord Extension

For safety reasons, it is preferable the van power cord be plugged directly into the van park power socket without having to use extension cords.  In many instances however we have found the standard 6 metre long cord on our Sportliner to be too short to allow this.  We have since replaced the 6 metre cord with a 10 metre cord (250V, 15A, heavy duty insulation rating) and find this adequate for most situations.  The original 6 metre cord is now used when needed as an extension cord.

Nevertheless, we still occasionally have to resort to using the extension cord.  Since the connection between van cord and extension cord will often be exposed to the weather, it is desirable this connection be as weatherproof as possible.  The Clipsal 437PR/SR (available from electrical wholesalers), when properly fitted, provides such protection. The 437PR (plug ring) is fitted to the van cord plug. and the 437SR (socket ring) to the extension cord socket.  As shown in the photograph, the van cord plug can be stowed in its usual location with the plug ring fitted.  For those van parks fitted with the newer power outlets, the 437PR will screw directly to those outlets providing a firmer mechanical connection then when relying on the plug pins alone. To avoid straining the cord clamp in the battery compartment when pulling out the power cord, pull the cord fully out  then wind a piece of contrasting colour electrical tape on the cord as in the photograph.  You will then always know when the cord is fully extended.

UPDATE 16TH JUNE 2001:- An early A'van owner has made us aware of the dangers of using non factory assembled extension leads. Under some circumstances in some earlier A'vans the ELCB could be rendered ineffective if you fitted a plug yourself and got the active and neutral wires about face. See A-Clinic under A'van Electrics for a simple checking procedure.
