Safety Chains are Important!

Safety chains are very important. We have had a bike trailer come off on a level crossing of all places, and another time we failed to lower the handle so it popped off the first time we braked. The feeling is awful! Don't just connect the chain to the same side, but cross them over. This limits side to side swinging if it does come off. Another good trick is to use a heavy padlock as one shackle. This is good security plus unlike a shackle pin it can't vibrate undone. It is good practice to carry a spare shackle as these can be easily lost.
