Anne's Scrappy Medallion Quilt - Part Two

Welcome back.  This month we have the central medallion block.

You will need to cut

bullet36 plain background blocks 2-1/2 inches square
bullet44 pattern blocks 2-1/2 inches square
bullet12 plain background blocks 3 inch square (which will be cut to make 24 triangles)
bullet12 pattern blocks 3 inch square (which will be cut to make 24 triangles

This is an illustration only on the left side. You need to make the medallion in three sections.
Piece only one section at a time. Instructions under.

On the left is the whole medallion.  The red outlines represent the patterned fabrics and the green the plain background fabric.  The medallion is constructed in three sections - top, centre and base as per the drawing on the right hand side.

Once again follow the instructions of last month for piecing.  If you need a reminder click here

The above diagram shows you the finished layout for all the blocks you made last month plus those three medallion parts, the pattern for which is above. The blue lines relate to the brights and the orange lines are the background or plain fabric.

I find the easiest way is to layout the blocks on the floor of my sewing/quilting room to make sure the colour balance is correct.  Whilst with brights there won't be much difference, if you use other mixed fabrics, you will need to spread the darks and lights and mediums around evenly.

If you have the luxury of a digital camera, take a photo of one layout.  Look again and change blocks around to suit.  Take another digital photo and so on until you think you have it right.  Then you can just compare the various possibilities on the computer.  That way hopefully the balance of colour will be right.

A-tip - Pin through both layers at the point where the seams are to join - make sure your pin is right on the stitching line of both the top and bottom layers - this will give you the perfect match for joins at corners.

Join in sections to incorporate the medallion pieces.  When you have the whole lot joined together, cut 2" strip to go around the whole perimeter.  This sashing will be the frame for the picture, so choose a colour which will bring all the other individual colours together.

The final touch is to cut a border - this quilt has a 5" one but you could go larger if you so desired.  Once again select a border colour to co-ordinate all those other individual colours.  I would strongly suggest you bind the quilt with the same fabric as your border.  That way we have two frames (border and sashing) around the gorgeous centre geometry.

If you have any problems, don't hesitate to email me.  The end result will be a beautiful use of all those small scraps and charm squares.  Now who is going to be the lucky recipient.  Don't forget to put your name and date on the back for prosperity!  You could be famous one day!!!

Happy stitching and happy travelling when you can!

Chrissy
