Subject: RE: TYRE PRESSURES FOR A'VAN TYRES

Hi Folks,

I have just finished ringing about a dozen different tyre dealers, explaining I was chasing tyres for my camper trailer with about a 1000KG loaded weight (I think A'van say 980 Kg loaded). I was ringing about light truck tyres as used on some A'vans, A'van say only to use tyre pressures (on both the light truck and car tyres for A'liners) of 28PSI. ALL of the dealers said that to use anything less than 40 PSI in the light truck tyres would make the tyre overheat and be subject to blowouts and tyre wear. The light truck tyre can go as high as 64 PSI, but they said 40PSI should be fine, but no less.

For the car size tyre, also used on A'liners, they said a minimum of 32 PSI up to about 35 PSI should be fine. I did not enquire about the pressures for the Sportsliner, which have a smaller tyre again.

Thought you may be interested in this info,

Kind regards

Hi! This confirms what the gentleman from Peachey Caravans repair people said, but on rough roads you would shake the van to pieces. I use 35psi on the open road and reduce to 28 on corrugated dirt roads where I found anything higher was meaning the A'van was been shaken around too much. It just bounced on all the bumps. I would be interested in any other reports you get.

Hi Bob,

Not too sure if I sent you the info on an A'van member who travelled around Australia with Classic tyres on 28 PSI and they were ruined (shredded) by the time he got to Queensland. On the other hand, on my trip around I alternated between 32 and 35 PSI with the same tyres and had even, minimal wear all round (22,000 kms), and no problems.

Apparently a spokesman from Caravan World, Tom................? spoke at the Nuriootpa Annual A'van Meeting and said that in his opinion that 28 PSI was too low and recommended 35 PSI and even higher if fully loaded (refer to Brendon Smith for exact details).

No further info to report, on a very intriguing subject!

Regards
