Stereo Disaster!

The moral of this story is never listen to your expert children! My wife Heather wanted to have nice soothing music in our A'liner when we were free camping in the bush. So off we went to Brisbane Car Sound and got a really good Sony CD Tuner/player and a couple of speakers which were on special. My son took one look at the gear and promptly advised that it will "have to have a sturdy plywood box". The deeper I got into this project the more I could see it was going to be a total disaster. It turned out that I had overlooked one of the fundamentals of buying anything stereo - get the best speakers you can afford. This set sounds dreadful. I am now looking around for better speakers and I will mount everything the same as everyone else! I particularly liked what Murray "Meccano" Nash did by mounting his in that spare space under the sink. Bob suggested another very low cost way. Use any CD player from an old computer and run it into any old computer set of speakers. He showed me this going into a subwoofer set-up and the sound was excellent. He pointed out that it ONLY works with CD's that have a headphone out socket on the front. You do need to reduce the voltage down to 5 volts. You do this with a resistor. Next month I hope to have a picture of my Mark 2 stereo!
