Unhappy with Chalet Specs! |
|
Looking through the Chalet specs, I am disappointed about
several things.
Their standard features:
Reasons
LESS WEIGHT for the water and the gas, you would only
need the increase in rare conditions, but not to warrant the increase in
weight all the time
MORE COMFORT the cushions in foam are more comfortable in the thicker foam. I selected Enduro foam 150 mm and have been very happy with that in sitting or sleeping. NO STORAGE BUMPER BAR on the Chalet, top marks to A'van for that, to store your poles. Now with the Chalet specs
They say tare weight is 640 kgs [I assume they mean
PLUS OPTIONS, but this is not stated]
GTM 1155 kgs.
This should give you at 10% + or - 10% 115
kgs +12 or - 12 equals a towball weight of 103 to 127 kgs range.
But Chalet specs say a towball weight of 85 kgs. This
is way way too light. The accepted standard is 10% + or - 10% of GTM,
Having too light a towball weight results in ,
when braking the van would initially tend to nose dip [good] but then
would try and raise the nose of the van even though it was still
braking and try and lift the back of the car !! With the GTM and the towball weight they are cutting down
the number of vehicles that would be able to tow the Chalet. Both the Avan and the Chalet were/are competing against
the tent trailers and the smaller Jayco's
with the joy of being like a caravan in that there is no canvas, but are
much lighter than the caravans, low tow as they fold down , so, fuel
efficient, easy, quick, light, no crosswind or passing trucks felt, easily
moved etc, but by increasing their weights ,they are slowly moving
themselves out of their original niche and competing more and more with
the caravan end and producing more limits as to, tow vehicles, having to
use level rides, or eventually move to hitch receivers.
Shame ,Shame ,Shame.
I feel both A'van and Chalet should limit themselves to
say a MAXIMUM tare weight of say 650 kgs ,plus a
MAXIMUM of 150 kgs in options, gives 800 kgs ,allowing you your own load
of 200kgs,giving a MAXIMUM GTM of 1000kgs, with the
proviso that, if your options came to more than 150 kgs, then you had to
cut them down to make that limit in options, or, if you wanted the works
you moved up to a much BIGGER size A'van, with say a tare of 1000
kgs ,options limit of say 300 kgs, and your own load of 300 kgs, giving
a GTM of 1600 kgs ,and then really compete against the caravans.
