A'van Stabiliser Modification

I am delighted by the Around-oz web site and the ideas that people come up with. Further to my e-mail to you on 15/08/01 and mention in the July 2001 A-Clinic of repairs to stabiliser legs, I have attached a photo showing the "welded washer" repair method. I have not looked into the mechanics of how it works, but it does, and I have since had similar work done on the other legs.

When I set-up the A'liner 2 recently at the Derby WA Caravan Park, I found that one of the front stabiliser legs would not provide any support and that the pin holding the thrust bush was missing. A mobile "caravan repairer" was staying in the park and had experienced this problem many times. His solution was not to replace the pin but to weld a large washer to the inboard end of the threaded rod thus stopping the rod from falling out and allowing the leg to be wound down and stabilise the van in the normal way. This fix avoided the need for finding and fitting a special pin. Note: the welded washer should be free to rotate with the threaded rod and not welded to the inboard face of the stabiliser leg. A photo showing the "welded washer" repair method is attached.
