Coleman Gas Lamps

Old hands will probably instantly identify with this costly annoying problem - buying shares in the Coleman glass factory! We are probably up to replacement glass number five at about $10.00 + a throw! So why do glasses keep breaking - apart from dropping etc. The answer is they are too tight. We modified ours to make it loose with at least 1mm clearance in all directions. This is pretty simple to do. All you need is to put spacers under the lid/top so that when the top nut is fully tightened the glass can still move. We just hunted through the "junk box" until we found a nut the right height and dropped it on the top. It is also a good idea to bend the zinc plated retainer located under the lid. Just bend until the two tabs still guide the glass. You MUST be able to do up the top retaining nut very tight without the glass becoming tight. The kerosene Coleman lamps are far better in this area as they also have a wire guard. One can only ask why don't the gas versions?
