Auto Lighting Coleman Gas Lamps |
![]() |
Raised up in the ready to light position. You just give the knurled brass knob on the bottom a quick twirl. It usually lights first time even in windy conditions. No more burnt fingers either! |
| We found this clever gadget in the camping section of Big W in Grafton, Northern NSW. It is a way of modifying your gas lamp - just about any brand - to light without matches and to light easily even in windy conditions. This is a very good modification, easy to do, fairly quick and very cheap at just $5.00. It seems to be all solid brass, so it should have a long life. To light your lamp just turn on the gas, push up the device and quickly turn, then drop down again. Works just about first time every time. All that is happening is it makes a strong stream of sparks using a flint. Spare flints are conveniently stored in the base of the handle. It adapted to the Coleman after a minor modification to the bottom clip holding the glass. We simply took a bit off the edge with a file. Other brands of lights we have, didn't present this problem. All you need to do to install it is drill a hole in the base exactly as per the instructions supplied or use the existing match hole. With our Coleman's we found that the hole needed to be enlarged slightly. We started using this at Christmas 2000 and find it's great not to have to mess around with matches. The gadget is called an Avid Outdoor Lantern Lighter Absolutely recommended! |
