We stumbled on this very informative site The 12 Volt Shop, as usual quite by accident! The complete page is reproduced below as there are other items that could be of interest to fellow caravanners. What particularly caught our attention was the opening louvre vents suitable for use with Electrolux fridges. This looks like an excellent idea as they seem to be designed to scoop in the air whilst you drive along. Having had a lot of experience with evaporative air coolers in Cairns we would suggest that these won't work in high humidity areas such as all of Northern Australia. We liked the Jensen style vent that closes when it rains and opens again when it stops! We first came across the Fantastic Fan in the American Chalets. We believe that they are now available in the A'van from the factory. You can retrofit one yourself as they fit into the standard 14" aperture used by the factory fitted Jensen 14" vent. Anyone thinking about this would be well advised to contact A'liner Owners Club (USA) Brad & Hannah Baile bbaile@sun-link.com in the States as they have done it with initially quite a few traumas. The 12 Volt Shop also sells a complete range of solar, TV and video and claim to have the largest range of low voltage connectors in Australia. Very interesting section on wind generators - we have yet to see one on a caravan! Another very interesting section deals with hot weather refrigerators. What makes these important to us is they fit straight into the existing Electrolux cavity PLUS they will work directly off solar using the well proven Danfoss 12 volt compressor. They also sell 12 volt elements for Electrolux fridges ($75.00) and have a lot of fact sheets. Bycool Evaporative Air Cooler

The Bycool Evaporator system features high quality fibre pads wrapped over an open wire cylinder. The pads slowly rotate in the water, which results in clean, efficient and economical cooling. Outside air is drawn through the wet evaporator, where it is then cooled, free of dust, dirt and pollens. The outside cover is UV Protected to prevent cracking or fading. A cam action drive assembly provides quiet, reliable power to the evaporator and auto fill systems.

ATTWOOD VENTS

High density FRIDGE INSULATION

These stainless steel vents have much larger holes than many of the vents available. The vents are available in 3, 5 and 10 louvre models. They can be used to provide ventilation for generators and three way refrigerators installed in caravans and motorhomes.

FINS

A refrigerator works by pumping the heat from the interior of the refrigerator to the exterior via the compressor. If we can reduce the amount of the heat that is able to enter the refrigerator, then the refrigerator will run less and use less power. Simple ways to avoid heat entering the refrigerator are to keep it in a cool well ventilated space and to reduce the number of times, and the length of time for which the door is opened. Ordinary 240 V refrigerators, and some imported 12 V refrigerators lack the insulation necessary to make them energy efficient. The power consumption of some of these refrigerators can be reduced by adding extra insulation to the outside. Each sheet of insulation has the dimensions of 2500 mm x 600 mm x 50 mm and can be purchased by the square meter.
