Romantic Dorrigo - NSW |
|
Want to put more romance into your marriage? Just one night at the Mountain Resort Caravan Park is all you'll need. Arriving in the fog and mist is wonderful with everything dripping wet. Of course all these comments only hold true if you are an A'vanner. Without doubt it could be a tenter's or canvas type camper trailer’s absolute worst nightmare. You realise this place is different in the office with that great big beautiful scribbly gum bang in the centre of the building, and the lovely timber cathedral ceilings. The gardens and greenery are delightful. The amenities with its long verandah adorned with lots of plants is quite delicious. Let's hope this place never changes hands. It would be absolute sacrilege to modernise the amenities. At present they fit the mood of the park perfectly. How many places have you been to with Ivy growing through the rafters, good luck horseshoes over every door, shower cubicles made of 6" rough sawn fence palings, the gaps in the palings covered with rough battens and tiles laid all higgledy piggledy and beautiful distressed pine all around the huge mirrors etc. There’s even a full size bath! We wouldn't change a thing. The place just oozes charm and character. Very hard to photograph in the gloom, but we think the photos sort of capture the mood! We arrived in total darkness at 5PM with the temperature 16 degrees - it was 46 degrees at Gilgandra where we spent the previous night! Anyway, we were snug as a bug in the A'van in jolly quick time. As it was raining on the roof, and you could only see a metre or so, we thought let’s have an early night. |

The verandah on the "amenities" block |
Photographers paradise - so much history |
| Well
even the best laid plans can go totally wrong. Our backs were playing up and we
used Goanna Heat Rub to get a bit of relief. Great stuff, and it
really works. Unfortunately the A'van hates it! Got you intrigued yet? Well we
popped into bed and after 5 minutes off goes the piercing alarm of the gas
detector fitted to all models made from late 2000. Remember it's super dark, so
we struggle to find a dressing gown to go outside to turn the mains gas off in the pouring
rain.
Pressed mute on the alarm - not easy for us oldies as you have to lay on the floor and press the mute switch located way under the bed. Back to bed and just got snuggled up and off it goes again! Hit the mute and smothered the thing with a pillow. Back to bed off it went again. Our feeble brains finally worked out it was the back rub stuff sending it crazy. We opened all the windows and wait for it - went and had hot showers! This did the trick but all thoughts of romance had long gone. Lichen and moss cover everything and when the mist clears there are views that reach forever. The morning birdsong is wonderful and you also get all the lovely farmyard sounds. The mountain water is better than ANYTHING you can buy in a bottle at ANY price. |

So all you A'vanners empty your tank and fill up. We also filled every other water container we could lay our hands on keeping our fingers crossed that we wouldn't lose our brakes going down the mountain towards the coast! Truly, you would drink twice as much water in a day if you had this at home. It must make you live longer and its totally free for the taking! Coming back to reality, the permanents are all grouped together right at the back of the park. You get to set up wherever you want, and by straddling two sites the wrong way we were able to stay hitched as this was just a one nighter. |

The Waterfall Way |
Gorgeous cobwebs |
| Anyway, who wants to unhitch in the pouring rain! Most sites have sullage and water and some have concrete annex pads. We chose the grass as it was nice and thick. The laundry is quaint, but adequate. The dryer was in constant use as drying is a problem so high up in the mountains. Rainfall is 1800mm a year and that's a lot of wetness! Neither Telstra GSM or CDMA worked reliably, but they did a little bit out on the main road coming into Dorrigo from the west. There is a Gold Phone on the right hand side of the office - a bit hard to find due to shrubbery. TV reception is absolutely brilliant particularly channel 2 but why anyone would need TV up here is doubtful. Zero problems with flies or mozzies probably tooooooo wet and cold for them. |

Dorrigo spends most of its time in the clouds - its not actually raining, you are just walking through heavy mist. We love it! Very, very English. There is even a charming restaurant in town called what else - "Misty"! This park is ideal to use as a base for exploring the surrounding area such as the Oxley Wild River Park. Dorrigo is literally surrounded by National Parks and be certain not to miss the skywalk open 9AM till 5PM daily. Breathtaking stuff! At present only one has proper camping areas at Barokee and Native Dog in Cathedral Rock National park at Ebor. National Parks put out some nice brochures on the area but very few shops seem to promote them so try to get maps from information centres outside the area. |

We
have been here in winter and its glorious. We did see a few bus type motor homes
free camping along the Waterfall Way in rest areas. None of these
sites were particularly exciting view wise. That is except this spot! Newell Falls about 7 kms east of
Dorrigo is a fantastic smoko stop and some even free camp there. There is a
terrific little rock fountain where you can drink your fill of fresh mountain
water. This spot is just about as good as it gets with valley views all the way
back to the sea! It has an excellent shelter shed with hand hewn timber seats
and table. Dorrigo is 6 hours from Brisbane and 7 hours from Sydney. More
information from Dorrigo Mountain Resort Caravan Park, 1 Bellingen Road, Dorrigo
(1.5 east of PO), (02) 6657 2564 or fax: (02) 6657 2146. No pets allowed. There
is a fair bit on the web on the park and Dorrigo but nothing to really blow your
socks off. Try http://www.users.omcs.com.au/dorrigo/
for a good map on how to get there, try http://www.frogandtoad.com.au/nsw/mnc/guyra/1campsites.html
for others nearby, for all about the town itself try http://www.walkabout.com.au/fairfax/locations/NSWDorrigo.shtml,
and this one is similar http://www.nnsw.com.au/dorrigo/. Cost in January 2001 was $19 for a powered site - they don't have non-powered by the way. There is a $5 key deposit. So do we recommend this two star park??? What do you think??? |

Postscript:- This is the gadget that caused all the grief! Someone mentioned it at our February 2001 club meeting. Seems nobody knows how to silence the thing! It appears that it has been dropped from 2001 models. Maybe some other A'vanners came to Dorrigo! |
